Welcome to Joy's Sojourn!

I feel grateful to bring this conversation to you through this workbook. In my creative practice I explore how individuals within the African Diaspora and Latin America seek joy and purpose, while also reflecting on themes of ancestry, family, community and colonial history. I do this through painting, drawing, printmaking, installation and sculpture as well as maintaining a social practice.

In light of recent difficult and painful global events, the search for joy, especially in times of personal and community strife, is something that I am very interested in exploring. The enjoyment and pleasure of joy for joy’s sake is also just as important to me, my understanding of the world and the development of my creative practice.

It feels important to me to document this work through the archiving of these conversations as well as through expressing them through works of art. Your engagement with this workbook will ask you to define joy, discuss its journey throughout your life and cultural upbringing as well as focus on joy as practice in your day to day experiences.

I hope the following prompts expand the ways in which you understand, experience and express joy!
