In honor of Black History Month and in support of families and individuals affected by ICE, 32 limited edition Giclée prints of my work Mañana are now available.
I am a child, grandchild and family member of Dominican immigrants who came to the USA in the 60s, 90s and 2000s. Experiencing the nuances and complexities of identity, nationality and ethnicity while living and growing in new places has been both beautiful and difficult. However, it has grounded me to the Earth and humanity in ways that feel so deep and incredibly important to my personal development. We all come from the same source.
My middle name Itzel means “the light that the sun casts as it rises”. I learned this definition from a Mayan friend in Mexico City a few years ago. The origin of the name. It is a beautiful name and a reminder that the light will always come tomorrow. That it is guaranteed. I know my community is going through an extremely difficult time in the United States. It feels dark. However, I have faith that things will get better.
In my artworks, I am drawn to the landscape: a physical landscape, an emotional landscape, a spiritual landscape, an imagined landscape. The morrow is a temporal landscape. It is a space that is yet to come. It is on the other side of the present. It waits and pushes. It draws and pulls. It is seductive, hopeful, mysterious and opaque. It asks you to chase it through its shining light.
The light will ALWAYS reveal itself. It shows itself through our daily actions, our civic involvement and care for the growth and development of this planet. We have to act. That is the true measure of love. ✨
*A generous percentage of sales will go towards Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) and families affected by ICE.
BAJI is a national organization, based in the United States, that fights for the rights of the Black diaspora in the US through organizing, legal advocacy, research, policy, and narrative building to improve the conditions of Black communities by advancing racial justice and migrant rights.
